SUMMARY:Edmonton WHO - Climate Change and it's Impact on Public Health
DESCRIPTION:EdmontonWHO simulates the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO).\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nEdmontonWHO simulates the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO)\, this year our conference topic is on “Climate Change and it’s Impact on Public Health”. \nOur goal is to introduce students to the fundamental operations of the World Health Organization and create opportunities for all participants to play a proactive role in learning about global health and policy. The conference brings together students from a wide range of disciplines to discuss global health issues in a manner that is respectable and intended to develop a deeper understanding of health\, sustainability\, and progress. The Edmonton World Health Organization Simulation is an interactive three day mock United Nations conference for post-secondary and high school students to debate global health topics. Our aim is to simulate the political\, social\, cultural and economic realities that define the world of global health policy. In addition\, we hope to expose students to potential future related interdisciplinary career options. We operate as a transnational project of the International Federation of Medical Students\, through which we hope to send resolutions created during our conference to the actual WHO. Edmonton WHO is also a project under the nonprofit organization\, Edmonton Simulation Conferences. \nFor more information please contact: ewho@ualberta.ca \n—————————————————————- \nTICKETS include: conference\, meals (dinner\, breakfast x2 + lunch x2)\, gala admission and prizes \nPlease note tickets are non-refundable. \nLocation\n\nUniversity of Alberta \n8900-114 street\, Edmonton\, AB T6G 2R3 \nView Map

SUMMARY:RainForest Summit
DESCRIPTION:We are at a pivotal point in Edmonton’s history. We have the chance to transition from a resource-based economy to one that embraces innovation\, technology\, and a vibrant diversity of businesses. \nBut in order to build the greater interconnectedness and culture needed to really make Edmonton an innovation hub\, we need to come together to honestly assess the state of the current system\, and what needs to change so that we can all build thriving businesses and startups here. Edmonton has the talent\, resources\, and the spaces needed to support entrepreneurs\, but without a strong sense of unity\, community\, collaboration and interconnectedness that make ecosystems like Silicon Valley hotspots for innovation\, communities like ours can still fall flat as a place for innovation. \nWe want to change that and we want you to join others who are passionate about building a stronger\, more resilient\, and more innovative economy for Edmonton that supports you. \nWhy Should You Attend?\nIf you want to be part of a group of people who aren’t sitting on the sidelines while decisions are made on their behalf\, who aren’t interested in shooting down the ideas of others but examining them and adapting them; if you want to actively participate in building a better future for Edmonton\, then this event is for you. \nWe’ll bring innovators\, doers\, strategists\, and thought leaders like you together to honestly evaluate Edmonton’s ecosystem and collaborate on ways we can do better to create a true hub of innovation in Edmonton. You bring an open mind and a desire to participate in building a better future. \nYou can get 20% off your registration by filling out the Scorecard Assessment\, before registering. This will give us a baseline pulse check of the community to bounce off for the event by measuring the collective responses against the 6 Rainforest Pillars. \nLearn more about the Scorecard and its Importance \nWhy is This Event Different?\nWe are not government-funded\, we are not institutional\, we are not bureaucratic. We are entrepreneur-led and focused. \nThis isn’t like other ‘initiatives’; this is doers looking to help other doers. \nThis event isn’t a community engagement session. It’s action-oriented and builds off existing reports from the community. \nWe are doing this because we see the potential in Edmonton to support those who think differently. We understand that now is the time for Alberta to embrace the knowledge-based economy and make progress towards diversification\, and we aren’t willing to sit on the sidelines and wait for this to happen on its own. \nWhat IS Rainforest Alberta?\nRainforest Alberta is an entrepreneur-led grassroots initiative that is working to support Alberta’s transition from a resource-based economy to one which embraces innovation. We aim to be an inclusive place where all the ingredients can assemble to work collectively towards this common goal. We contribute to the community by actively working to remove the transactional barriers that stifle innovation and building a community that trusts and encourages each other. \nEven with talent\, capital\, and business-friendly policies\, a community may still fail as a place for innovation. Intentionally building an innovation ecosystem is vital to connecting and building upon those basic ingredients. \nWe use the principles of The Rainforest: The Secret to Building the Next Silicon Valley book by Victor Hwang and Greg Horowitt to help us evaluate\, influence and improve the Alberta innovation economy. We’ve localized their scorecard into a measurement tool that helps us assess the quality of Edmonton’s ecosystem. We have set a goal of improving the scores in both Calgary and Edmonton to 800/1000 by 2020. Currently\, we only rank 643 on that scorecard. We need to do better. \nLearn more about Rainforest Alberta – yeg \nWe look forward to meeting you at the event and changing the Albertan innovation system\, together! We’ll give you 20% off your registration to say thank you for filling out the Scorecard Assessment (the discount code is on the last page). \nLearn more about the Scorecard and its Importance

DESCRIPTION:Time: \n1:00 PM – 4:30 PM\,  Nov 23rd\, 2019 (Saturday) \nCo-hosted by: \n\nAction for Healthy Communities\nAlberta Artificial Intelligence Association\n\nPartners: \n\nCentral McDougall Queen Mary Park Revitalization\nCity of Edmonton\n\nLocation: Central Lions Recreation Centre 11113 – 113 Street\, Edmonton \nClick HERE to register. \nAbstract: \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is not a science-fiction dream anymore and has truly arrived. At the heart of much of today’s technological innovation\, AI is going to change the world more than anything in human history. Quickly becoming a key part of our everyday lives in the near future\, AI will have a significant impact on every section of our society. Thanks to expertise from the University of Alberta and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii)\, Edmonton is one of three hubs for AI research in Canada\, playing a global leader in the field. \nAlthough AI has the potential to greatly improve many things\, however\, there are some concerns about AI as well. For example\, AI will lead to many job losses\, increasing unemployment. Many people are scared. Are we ready for AI? How can we prepare Edmontonians for AI to adopt the pioneer role the city is playing in the nation and the world? Leadership is the key. The purpose of this leadership training workshop is to educate our community leaders as pioneers to recognize\, acknowledge\, and fully embrace how AI can transform the way we will live and work. \nThis is the first leadership training on AI awareness and readiness in Edmonton. We believe it will create a history in Edmonton to help people adopt the age of AI. We hope after the training\, the workshop will facilitate participants to achieve high-value knowledge acquisition and reskilling that capitalize on the transformative powers of an AI-ready culture. Eventually\, we wish participants can take a leadership role in helping their communities develop capacities to embrace the age of AI. \nSpeakers: \nProf. Howard Nye. \nTopic: Technological Displacement and the Duty to Increase Real Incomes: from Left to Right \nBio: Howard Nye\, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alberta\, works primarily in the areas of normative ethics\, practical ethics\, and meta-ethics\, and has related interests in political philosophy\, the philosophy of mind\, and decision theory. \nFor more information about Prof. Nye\,  please check here. \nProf. Bin Zheng: M.D. Ph.D.\, Director of SSRL\, Endowed research chair in surgical simulation. \nTopic: Human intelligence and AI application in surgical simulation. \nBio: Bin Zheng\, Associate Professor in Surgery\, holds the Endowed Research Chair in Surgical Simulation position in the Department of Surgery of the University of Alberta.  Prof Zheng collaborates with surgeons\, engineers\, clinical educators\, and psychologists to develop simulators and evaluation educational outcome of simulation-based programs.  His long-term goal is to prompted the use of simulation in surgery for improving care quality and patient safety. \nFor more information about Prof. Zheng\,  please check here. \nProf. Irene Cheng\, Director of Smart Multimedia Research Centre\, UAlberta. \nTopic: Multimedia\, AI concepts and AI education. \nBio: Dr. Irene Cheng\, (SMIEEE) is the Scientific Director of the iCORE Multimedia Research Centre and an Adjunct Faculty in Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry\, and Faculty of Science\, University of Alberta\, Canada. SUMMARY:How to raise funds for deep technology growth companies
DESCRIPTION:TEC Edmonton and FormulateIP in collaboration with ChapterAI present a panel discussion on opportunities in raising investment for deep technology (artificial intelligence\, machine learning\, internet of things) growth companies.  Topics covered: \nPanel Discussion: How to raise funds (Pre Series A/Series A) for Deep Technology (AI/ML/IOT) Growth Companies\nPresented by: FormulateIP\, TEC Edmonton\, ChapterAI\nEvening of 19th November belongs to deep technology Entrepreneurs and growth companies! \nDeep Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, Machine Learning (ML)\, Internet of Things (IOT) are quickly becoming foundational technologies for any business. They have begun addressing a variety of issues around using deep technologies to make software and processes much more efficient. \nInvesting in deep tech growth company requires a different playbook due to its nascent systems and complexity. Many deep tech products are still in their conceptual and prototypical phase\, and are still years away from viable commercialization. And because they comprise layers of hitherto unseen algorithms and mechanics\, investors often find it difficult to fund such nascent companies\, as they do not have the expertise and knowledge to analyze the potential value of such a technology — especially when there is lack of similar precedent products or competitors to compare to. \nTEC Edmonton and FormulateIP in collaboration with ChapterAI are organizing a panel discussion on opportunities in raising investment for deep technology growth companies. We’ll start with a panel discussion during which the experts will talk about the fundraising process (Pre Series A/Series A and further rounds) and what it takes to successfully raise funding\, followed by Q&A. Some topics that’ll be covered during the panel are debunking some common myths associated with fundraising\, prerequisites a company should meet before raising investments and the best practices to work with VC communities. This event will be particularly useful for established startups which have raised seed round and looking to raise next round of funding. \nThe panel discussion will be followed by a light dinner and entrepreneurs will get an opportunity to network with panel members\, other investors and mentors who will be joining the event. \nVenue: 4th floor\, TEC Edmonton \nPanelists: \nNeeraj Gupta (Moderator) CoFounder & Director – ChaperAI l AI Foundry l FormulateIP l Lawcubator l Kfx Labs \nCheryll Watson\, VP – Innovate Edmonton and Edmonton Economic Development Corporation \nJammie Lucient\, Founder – Zyphos Analytics \nRyan Heit\, Director – Merck Invention Accelerator & CoFounder at Valhalla Private Capital \nSchedule:\n5:00 – 5:15 – Networking\n5:15 – 6:15 – Panel\n6:15 – 7:00 – Networking & Light DinnerDate: November 19th

SUMMARY:Teens Learning Code: JavaScript for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Why learn JavaScript? \nJavaScript is simple but powerful. It is the backbone to all those nifty animations you see on websites and it powers many modern day web applications\, including Gmail\, Google Maps\, and Facebook (to only name 0.00001% of the sites that use JavaScript!). \nMany aspects of JavaScript can be easy for even absolute beginners to grasp but has powerful language constructs that can be used down the road. With JavaScript\, getting started is super simple\, since all you need is a web browser and a text editor. No need to worry about installing interpreters\, compilers\, or any of that mumbo jumbo. \nThe Teens Learning Code Introduction to JavaScript workshop is designed to be a hands-on experience. Join us for this full day workshop and you will: \n\nlearn basic programming techniques and concepts that are translatable to other programming languages\nreview the basic building blocks of how HTML\, CSS\, and JavaScript work together to create richer online experiences\nwrite JavaScript to create a snazzy shopping cart\nget a quick introduction to the popular JavaScript framework library jQuery\nget an idea of what resources are available if you’d like to continue learning at home (and we think you will)\n\nWho is this for?\nOur Teens Learning Code workshops and events offer female-identified\, trans\, and non-binary youth ages 13-17 opportunities to take action on ideas that will shape our future while leveraging the power of technology. Our learning experiences are much more than learning how to code. Our experiences empower teens to learn problem solving skills\, how to turn ideas into reality\, exposure to what a future in technology could look like\, and much more. \nPrerequisites:\nNone! This workshop is designed for beginners. \nWhat’s Included:\n\n\n\n\nRequirements:\n\nNote: If you do not have a laptop to use during the duration of the workshop\, we have a limited quantity that we can loan out. The option to borrow a laptop will be included in your order form when registering. \n\nHey you! Have you joined the Canada Learning Code mailing list? If not\, join here.\n\nQuestions?
