SUMMARY:Lougheed College Lecture Series: Dr. Deena Hinshaw
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Deena Hinshaw presents as part of the 2020-21 Lougheed College Lectures\, which has a theme of leadership and public institutions.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nThe 2020-21 Lougheed College Lecture series is organized around the theme of leadership and public institutions. Governments\, courts\, universities\, cultural institutions\, public health agencies\, financial regulators and other offices charged with ensuring the public good face special scrutiny from the people they serve. We expect our tax-funded institutions to deliver value for money\, and to act ethically and responsibly to ensure citizen well-being. And we have high demands for accountability and responsiveness. What does it take to lead such organizations\, especially when the decisions are fraught and the stakes are high? How do public leaders engage the people they serve in decision-making? How do they address dissent and controversy? What are the consequences of “fake news\,” the growing skepticism around expertise\, and political polarization for the necessary work of serving the public good? Our speakers will tackle these challenging issues with hard-won insights from the front lines. \nDr. Deena Hinshaw address the topic\, Leadership in Public Service: We are all in this together as a featured guest of the Lougheed College Lectures. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has made our interdependencies more visible and has called each of us to make choices to serve our communities in both formal and informal ways. In this talk\, Dr. Deena Hinshaw will reflect on her experience of leadership in the pandemic\, and the ways that she has\, in her role\, intersected with the leaders who serve their communities every day. Drawing on her work as one of the public faces of Alberta’s response to COVID-19\, she will talk about the different ways in which we can amplify and support each other in sustaining and nurturing healthy communities. \nThis lecture is presented in partnership with the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta. \nBe informed\, challenged\, and inspired by local\, national\, and international leaders from government\, business\, academia\, and the cultural and nonprofit sectors. The Lougheed College Lectures sponsored by Syncrude present exceptional speakers from interdisciplinary backgrounds. They will share their perspectives and insights on the leadership needed to face the complex challenges of the 21st century. \nDate And Time \n\nThu\, April 15\, 2021 \n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM MDT

SUMMARY:Impact of AI on our Life
DESCRIPTION:Time: \n1:00 PM – 4:30 PM\,  Nov 23rd\, 2019 (Saturday) \nCo-hosted by: \n\nAction for Healthy Communities\nAlberta Artificial Intelligence Association\n\nPartners: \n\nCentral McDougall Queen Mary Park Revitalization\nCity of Edmonton\n\nLocation: Central Lions Recreation Centre 11113 – 113 Street\, Edmonton \nClick HERE to register. \nAbstract: \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is not a science-fiction dream anymore and has truly arrived. At the heart of much of today’s technological innovation\, AI is going to change the world more than anything in human history. Quickly becoming a key part of our everyday lives in the near future\, AI will have a significant impact on every section of our society. Thanks to expertise from the University of Alberta and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii)\, Edmonton is one of three hubs for AI research in Canada\, playing a global leader in the field. \nAlthough AI has the potential to greatly improve many things\, however\, there are some concerns about AI as well. For example\, AI will lead to many job losses\, increasing unemployment. Many people are scared. Are we ready for AI? How can we prepare Edmontonians for AI to adopt the pioneer role the city is playing in the nation and the world? Leadership is the key. The purpose of this leadership training workshop is to educate our community leaders as pioneers to recognize\, acknowledge\, and fully embrace how AI can transform the way we will live and work. \nThis is the first leadership training on AI awareness and readiness in Edmonton. We believe it will create a history in Edmonton to help people adopt the age of AI. We hope after the training\, the workshop will facilitate participants to achieve high-value knowledge acquisition and reskilling that capitalize on the transformative powers of an AI-ready culture. Eventually\, we wish participants can take a leadership role in helping their communities develop capacities to embrace the age of AI. \nSpeakers: \nProf. Howard Nye. \nTopic: Technological Displacement and the Duty to Increase Real Incomes: from Left to Right \nBio: Howard Nye\, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alberta\, works primarily in the areas of normative ethics\, practical ethics\, and meta-ethics\, and has related interests in political philosophy\, the philosophy of mind\, and decision theory. \nFor more information about Prof. Nye\,  please check here. \nProf. Bin Zheng: M.D. Ph.D.\, Director of SSRL\, Endowed research chair in surgical simulation. \nTopic: Human intelligence and AI application in surgical simulation. \nBio: Bin Zheng\, Associate Professor in Surgery\, holds the Endowed Research Chair in Surgical Simulation position in the Department of Surgery of the University of Alberta.  Prof Zheng collaborates with surgeons\, engineers\, clinical educators\, and psychologists to develop simulators and evaluation educational outcome of simulation-based programs.  His long-term goal is to prompted the use of simulation in surgery for improving care quality and patient safety. \nFor more information about Prof. Zheng\,  please check here. \nProf. Irene Cheng\, Director of Smart Multimedia Research Centre\, UAlberta. \nTopic: Multimedia\, AI concepts and AI education. \nBio: Dr. Irene Cheng\, (SMIEEE) is the Scientific Director of the iCORE Multimedia Research Centre and an Adjunct Faculty in Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry\, and Faculty of Science\, University of Alberta\, Canada. SUMMARY:Sobey Art Awards - Event at AGA
DESCRIPTION:Sobey Art Award\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiscover the shortlisted artists for the 2019 Sobey Art Award! \nStephanie Comilang\, Nicolas Grenier\, Kablusiak\, Anne Low and D’Arcy Wilson are this year’s shortlisted artists. \nEstablished in 2002\, the Sobey Art Award aims to promote new developments in contemporary Canadian art and provide opportunities for artists\, bringing them national and international attention. \nThe program represents a total commitment of more than $650\,000 CA annually. This year it will present $240\,000 in prize money — including a top prize of $100\,000 for the winner. Each of the four finalists will receive $25\,000\, and the other longlisted artists will receive $2\,000 each. In addition to monetary awards\, three artists from the longlist will be selected by the jury to take part in the Sobey Art Award Residencies Program. Finally\, one shortlisted artist will be selected by Fogo Island Arts to attend an annual residency. \n\n\n\nChampions of Art in Canada: the 2018 Sobey Art Award\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Hampton\n\n\n\n\nNovember 14\, 2018\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor one evening at the beginning of October\, in the Austrian birthplace of Mozart and home of the popular von Trapp family\, Canadian art was the talk of the Salzburger Kunstverein. Although the local members of the public and the group of European journalists present might not know Whitehorse from Winnipeg\, they gathered to hear Josée Drouin-Brisebois\, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada and Chair of the 2018 Sobey Art Award\, discuss the practices of the five Canadian artists selected from regions across the country as finalists for one of Canada’s richest and most prestigious art awards. \nOne focus of Drouin-Brisebois’ presentation was the growing role of such art prizes within curatorial work and among cultural institutions looking to help develop the profile of their artists beyond national borders. This was of particular interest to the audience at the Kunstverein\, one of Austria’s oldest art galleries of contemporary art. “Maybe the best way to draw greater attention to Canadian artists is by also giving them greater visibility outside of Canada\, by increasing their international presence\,” Drouin-Brisebois commented back in Ottawa. “What kinds of opportunities could that lead to?” \n2019 SOBEY ART AWARD GALA \nRob Sobey\, Chair\, Sobey Art Foundation; Catherine Crowston\, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Art Gallery of Alberta; Françoise E. Lyon\, Chair\, Board of Trustees\, National Gallery of Canada; and Sasha Suda\, PhD\, Director and CEO\, National Gallery of Canada\, cordially invite you to the 2019 Sobey Art Award Gala at the Art Gallery of Alberta. \nOn this special evening\, artists\, curators\, donors and other contemporary art lovers from across Canada will gather to celebrate the shortlisted artists and discover the name of this year’s winner of the Sobey Art Award. \nFriday 15 November 2019 \nCOCKTAIL RECEPTION at 6 pm\nSpeeches at 7 pm\nArt Gallery of Alberta\nEdmonton\, AB \nInvitation only to Donors of the Alberta Art Gallery
