SUMMARY:Machine Learning 101 with Amii
DESCRIPTION:Heralded by many as the fourth industrial revolution\, artificial intelligence has inspired countless news articles\, novels\, and films. With this deluge of information comes hopes and aspirations\, fears and misconceptions – some justified and others not.How can we make sense of it all?Join Amii as we pull back the curtain on AI and lay a pragmatic foundation for what AI is\, what it isn’t\, and how you can begin to think about the place of AI in your business.Register here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/machine-learning-101-with-amii-tickets-54597647032

SUMMARY:Data Science Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Startup Edmonton \nWednesday\, March 6 at 6:30 PM \n• “Cost-Sensitive Classifier Evaluation Using Cost Curves” – Professor Robert Holte (CS @ UofA)\n• “Figuring out the limits of human vision with deep learning” – Navaneeth Kamballur Kottayil (Machine Learning Researcher at BorealisAI) \nPizza will be provided before presentations and after presentations we will head to a pub for networking! \nThe meetup is sponsored by AltaML (http://altaml.com/). \nAbstracts: \nCost-Sensitive Classifier Evaluation Using Cost Curves\n(co-author: Chris Drummond)\nThe evaluation of classifier performance in a cost-sensitive setting is straightforward if the operating conditions (misclassification costs and class distributions) are fixed and known. When this is not the case\, evaluation requires a method of visualizing classifier performance across the full range of possible operating conditions. This talk outlines the most important requirements for cost-sensitive classifier evaluation\, and introduces a technique for classifier performance visualization – the cost curve – that meets all these requirements. This talk should be of interest to anyone who works in areas that use classifiers\, for example\, machine learning\, pattern recognition\, biometrics\, and diagnosis.\nRelated papers:\nhttp://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10994-006-8199-5\nhttps://webdocs.cs.ualberta.ca/~holte/Publications/kdd2000.pdf \nFiguring out the limits of human vision with deep learning\nIn this talk\, I present a part of my PhD thesis done in collaboration with Telecom Paristech. In this work\, we explored methods to derive the human perceptual limit to see changes in an image. We proposed a new method to solve the problem with convolutional neural network. Our solution involved using deep learning in conjunction with traditional methods in psychophysics. Our method derives the human error detection threshold by solving an alternative problem of image quality assessment. We tested our method on publicly available databases for measuring human visual thresholds and show state of the art results.\nRelated papers:\nhttps://arxiv.org/abs/1712.07269\nhttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/327994999_Learning_Local_Distortion_Visibility_from_Image_Quality \nEdmonton Data Science meetup is a place to learn about data science and network with fellow Data Scientists. SUMMARY:Machine Learning 101 with Amii
DESCRIPTION:Heralded by many as the fourth industrial revolution\, artificial intelligence has inspired countless news articles\, novels\, and films. With this deluge of information comes hopes and aspirations\, fears and misconceptions – some justified and others not.How can we make sense of it all? Join Amii as we pull back the curtain on AI and lay a pragmatic foundation for what AI is\, what it isn’t\, and how you can begin to think about the place of AI in your business.

SUMMARY:Open Hardware Christmas Social
DESCRIPTION:Christmas Social at State & Main Kitchen & Bar!This year we’ll be meeting at the State & Main restaurant in the South West corner of Southgate Mall. There is an LRT station there\, so it should be easy to get to even if you are coming from downtown. Come out for great conversation and social interaction around open hardware technology in Edmonton.Meet at 6:30pm at 5015 111 St NW #850\, Edmonton\, AB T6H 4M6.Please RSVP a couple of days ahead of the date\, so that we can make a reservation.Cheers! What is Open Hardware? The Open Hardware Meetup is a place where all kinds of people can share an interest in the intersection of hardware\, software\, connectivity\, and user experience. When combined\, these elements create a new art which blends the lines of beauty and technology.Even as computing devices have become more powerful\, the underlying technology is now more and more available for everyone. With a few mouse clicks\, overnight shipping\, and a few hours work\, you can build your own versions of ground-breaking products based on simple open platforms like Arduino\, Raspberry Pi\, Beaglebone\, Galileo\, Edison\, and more. Even better\, you can create something that has not physically existed. It is the flexibility and power of computing\, expressed in physical\, tangible form.Who is it for?Everyone is welcome\, from casual observers to nascent hobbyists to advanced techs. Presentations will range from beginner how tos\, to highlighting cool projects from Edmonton and Alberta. There is almost always food before and drinks after. We’re always open to new speakers and topics as requested by our members.Examples of things we’ve done-learn to solder\,-basics of arduino\,-automated basketball robots from a local high school team-projected surfaces and their use in theatre set design\,-magnetic computer displays for the visually impairedExamples of things we want to do-lighting\, home automation\, wearables\, drones/navigation\, 3D printing\, arduino\, raspberry Pi\, beaglebone and other open hardware platforms.-workshops\,-build days\, similar to hackathon\, where a group of people with varying skills create and finish projects-specialty sub-clusters where people can specialize in wearables\, lighting and home automation\, maker technology\, and dronesWe welcome you to Open Hardware Meetup and together we’ll create wow.

SUMMARY:AWS re:Invent re:Cap 2018
DESCRIPTION:The final Edmonton AWS User Group Meetup of 2018!If you weren’t able to make it to AWS re:Invent this year in Las Vegas (Nov. 26-30) don’t you worry! SUMMARY:RainForest Summit
DESCRIPTION:There’s more to building a city of innovation than just the basics. You can have talent\, capital\, and business-Efriendly policies and still fall flat as a place for innovation\, while other cities take their place as the next Silicon Valley. Why? Because you need an innovation ecosystem connecting and building on those basic ingredients. \nThe Rainforest Alberta initiative works together to improve Alberta’s innovation ecosystem\, based on the principles of The Rainforest: The Secret to Building the Next Silicon Valley. We use a scorecard from that resource to measure the quality of Edmonton’s ecosystem twice a year\, with the goal of increasing our score to 800 out of 1000 by 2020. \nanRin \nWho Should Attend?\nThe Rainforest Alberta – yeg Summit brings together a group of Edmonton innovators\, doers\, strategists\, and thought leaders together to evaluate Edmonton’s ecosystem and discuss how we can do better to create a true hub of innovation in Edmonton. \nIf you are passionate about building a stronger\, more resilient\, more innovative economy for Edmonton\, you need to attend this session. Not sure if this is a good fit for you? Read more about Rainforest Alberta – yeg! \nAssessing Innovation in Edmonton\nDuring the summit\, attendees will analyze the state of innovation in Edmonton using the results of the Rainforest Scorecard.
