SUMMARY:Teens Learning Code: JavaScript for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Why learn JavaScript? \nJavaScript is simple but powerful. It is the backbone to all those nifty animations you see on websites and it powers many modern day web applications\, including Gmail\, Google Maps\, and Facebook (to only name 0.00001% of the sites that use JavaScript!). \nMany aspects of JavaScript can be easy for even absolute beginners to grasp but has powerful language constructs that can be used down the road. With JavaScript\, getting started is super simple\, since all you need is a web browser and a text editor. No need to worry about installing interpreters\, compilers\, or any of that mumbo jumbo. \nThe Teens Learning Code Introduction to JavaScript workshop is designed to be a hands-on experience. Join us for this full day workshop and you will: \n\nlearn basic programming techniques and concepts that are translatable to other programming languages\nreview the basic building blocks of how HTML\, CSS\, and JavaScript work together to create richer online experiences\nwrite JavaScript to create a snazzy shopping cart\nget a quick introduction to the popular JavaScript framework library jQuery\nget an idea of what resources are available if you’d like to continue learning at home (and we think you will)\n\nWho is this for?\nOur Teens Learning Code workshops and events offer female-identified\, trans\, and non-binary youth ages 13-17 opportunities to take action on ideas that will shape our future while leveraging the power of technology. Our learning experiences are much more than learning how to code. Our experiences empower teens to learn problem solving skills\, how to turn ideas into reality\, exposure to what a future in technology could look like\, and much more. \nPrerequisites:\nNone! This workshop is designed for beginners. \nWhat’s Included:\n\n\n\n\nRequirements:\n\nNote: If you do not have a laptop to use during the duration of the workshop\, we have a limited quantity that we can loan out. The option to borrow a laptop will be included in your order form when registering. \n\nHey you! Have you joined the Canada Learning Code mailing list? If not\, join here.\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:YPE & FutureCite Event: Imagine Your Future Community\, Company and City
DESCRIPTION:Description\n\n\n\n\nYoung Professionals in Energy and FutureCite Jointly Presents\nTedTalks: What will the world be like in 20 years (Future of Energy\, Transportation and Food Production) \nThe global world as we know it now is changing faster than we can adapt economically\, culturally and geopolitically. Throughout history\, human creativity and ingenuity have played key roles in overcoming past economic and industrial disruptions and upheavals within their jurisdictional borders. This digital transformation however is different\, as its impact and reach will be felt exponentially and simultaneously by the entire world – and will impact future Living\, Learning and Lifestyles. \nEvent Overview \nThe focus of this event is to engage the audience to “Imagine how they can play a role in the direction and adoption of AI to shape future Living and Lifestyles in their communities\, companies and cities. \nTopics and Invited Speakers \nFuture Living \n\nFuture of Energy (Power & Utilities & Energy) – William York\, ATCO\n\n\nAI\, sensors and devices (IoT) in everything and anything in communities\, companies and cities\, will enable the exponential connectivity & integration of products and services in\, and to homes and work hubs and with multiple sources of energy. Next generation will have different expectations in the access\, usage\, and preferences in their choices of products and services.\n\n\nFuture of Mobility (Transportation & Logistics) – Yeatland Wong\, Stantec\n\n\nAI\, and how we will travel from place to place and the impact it will have in the design of communities and cities. The adoption of Autonomous Vehicles\, the planning of Infrastructure from highways to hyperloops\, and from sky to sea to space will dramatically change the current definition of mobility\, as well as the energy source choices. Next generation of travelers and users of mobility products and services will consider time\, cost\, convenience and user experience.\n\nFuture Lifestyle \n\nFuture of Food – Speaker Invitation to ALES (UofA) Dr. Stan Blade \n\n\nAI is changing dramatically with in sensors in everything from satellite imaging for GPS and automated farming equipment in food production\, vertical farming and urban farming\, and options in energy sources. Next generation of young food producers will be looking at modernizing the farm without losing the values of why they produce\, distribute or retail food.\n\n Agenda \n5:30 PM Registration Opens \n6:00 PM Introduction \n6:05 PM Future of Energy \n6:20 PM 5 minute break to post ideas \n6:25 PM Future of Mobility \n6:40 PM 5 minute break to post ideas \n6:45 PM Future of Food \n7:00 PM 5 minute break to post ideas \n7:05 PM 20 minute break for networking\, food and refreshments \n7:30 PM Q&A Panel for 3 presenters \nEvent Closes \nSpeaker Bios \nFuture of Energy \nWilliam York P.Eng. \nHolding a Bachelor of Science with distinction in electrical engineering\, William is a professional engineer with more than five years of utility industry experience. including distribution automation and asset strategy engineer at ATCO electric. SUMMARY:Data Science Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Startup Edmonton \nWednesday\, March 6 at 6:30 PM \n• “Cost-Sensitive Classifier Evaluation Using Cost Curves” – Professor Robert Holte (CS @ UofA)\n• “Figuring out the limits of human vision with deep learning” – Navaneeth Kamballur Kottayil (Machine Learning Researcher at BorealisAI) \nPizza will be provided before presentations and after presentations we will head to a pub for networking! \nThe meetup is sponsored by AltaML (http://altaml.com/). \nAbstracts: \nCost-Sensitive Classifier Evaluation Using Cost Curves\n(co-author: Chris Drummond)\nThe evaluation of classifier performance in a cost-sensitive setting is straightforward if the operating conditions (misclassification costs and class distributions) are fixed and known. When this is not the case\, evaluation requires a method of visualizing classifier performance across the full range of possible operating conditions. This talk outlines the most important requirements for cost-sensitive classifier evaluation\, and introduces a technique for classifier performance visualization – the cost curve – that meets all these requirements. This talk should be of interest to anyone who works in areas that use classifiers\, for example\, machine learning\, pattern recognition\, biometrics\, and diagnosis.\nRelated papers:\nhttp://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10994-006-8199-5\nhttps://webdocs.cs.ualberta.ca/~holte/Publications/kdd2000.pdf \nFiguring out the limits of human vision with deep learning\nIn this talk\, I present a part of my PhD thesis done in collaboration with Telecom Paristech. In this work\, we explored methods to derive the human perceptual limit to see changes in an image. We proposed a new method to solve the problem with convolutional neural network. Our solution involved using deep learning in conjunction with traditional methods in psychophysics. Our method derives the human error detection threshold by solving an alternative problem of image quality assessment. We tested our method on publicly available databases for measuring human visual thresholds and show state of the art results.\nRelated papers:\nhttps://arxiv.org/abs/1712.07269\nhttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/327994999_Learning_Local_Distortion_Visibility_from_Image_Quality \nEdmonton Data Science meetup is a place to learn about data science and network with fellow Data Scientists.
